Overview

Buying a Curves Franchise
There are two ways to buy a Curves franchise. One is to buy a new franchise territory where there is not currently a Curves in operation and open one. The other is to buy an existing Curves that is owned and operated by a Curves franchisee who is considering selling the franchise.

The availability of these two opportunities varies considerably by country. For example, there are some areas of the U.S. and Canada where new franchise territories are not available, but there are opportunities to purchase an existing Curves. In most other countries, there are a large number of available new franchise territories, but few, if any, existing Curves for sale.

Curves Training
Gary Heavin and his wife Diane opened the first Curves in the United States in 1992. This new, 30-minute fitness concept combined strength training and sustained cardiovascular activity through safe and effective hydraulic resistance. The comfortable, supportive environment was designed for women and was immediately successful. Gary had recognized a need and an opportunity to help prevent deteriorating health and potential illness by caring for people through proper fitness. Diane had a passion for exercise and the experience of an advertising executive. Together, they realized that women across the world would benefit from the Curves program. They began to develop plans for franchising the concept, with the first club opening in 1995.

Curves reached 1,000 locations in 5 years and over 9,000 locations at the 10 year anniversary. Today, founders Gary and Diane Heavin are considered the innovators of the express fitness phenomenon. The Curves story continues to grow in new directions. Gary is the author of numerous books, including The New York Times bestseller Curves, which is revolutionizing America's approach to dieting. Curves' locations now offer a weight management program featuring a groundbreaking, scientifically proven method to raise metabolic rate and end the need for perpetual dieting. In recent years, Diane launched the award-winning diane, The Curves Magazine, which is currently available only in Curves franchises and has a circulation of 1.4 million. In November 2005, Diane introduced the new Curves high-fashion retail line, Curvaceous, The Curves Collection.

Curves has made exercise available to over 4 million women around the world, many of whom are in the gym for the first time. With 10,000 locations in more than 44 countries, Curves is the world's largest fitness franchise and the tenth largest of all franchise companies in the world. The fact that this phenomenal growth has been realized almost entirely through the positive word-of-mouth from Curves members is a true tribute to the value the program provides.

Why Curves?

Curves Classes
A Proven Business Model for Success
Gary Heavin and his wife Diane opened the first Curves in the United States in 1992. This new concept of 30-minute fitness, strength training, weight loss guidance and a comfortable environment designed for women, was immediately successful. Gary recognized a need and an opportunity to help prevent deteriorating health and potential illness by caring for people through proper fitness. Diane had a passion for exercise and the experience of an advertising executive. They realized that women across the world would benefit from the Curves program. Together they began to franchise this wonderful concept and opened the first franchise in 1995.

At the end of the first year, there were 50 franchise locations. Curves reached 1,000 locations within 36 months and nearly 10,000 locations in just 10 years. Curves is listed in Guinness World Records as "The World's Largest Fitness Center Franchise." Entrepreneur Magazine named Curves "The Number 1 Best New Franchise" two years in a row and "The Number 1 Fitness Franchise" for the past six years. Curves is now located in 55 countries on 6 continents.

Curves is where women change their lives
Curves is the world's first 30 minute complete aerobic and strength training workout. But, it's more than just a workout. Curves is an environment where women can acquire the habit of exercise and a culture where women get the support and encouragement they need to change their lives.

Many of our members say that their time at Curves is the fastest 30 minutes of their week! The laughter, conversation, and sense of support that you see at the typical Curves is different from any other health club you may have visited in the past.

Many competitors say they have a 30 minute workout for women. Many competitors have tried to copy our circuit equipment. But only Curves has the culture, passion, and support that has propelled us to become the largest fitness franchise in the world.

The cost of a low investment Curves Franchise is $29,900 with delivery of the Curves equipment ranging from $3,000- $5,000. When you come to Texas for training, you will be provided other materials such as wall charts, music, cue tapes, start up forms, supplies, and specialized training in the operation your club. Other costs that you may incur in opening your Franchise include but may not be limited to, a lease, lease space finish out, stereo system, deposits on utilities, telephones, computers and local advertising, all of which will be purchased from third party vendors. Since Curves does not maintain an office in your state, you will also incur travel expenses to Texas for training.

Royalties
Curves charges a monthly franchise royalty and a monthly advertising royalty that are based on a percentage of gross revenues. In both cases, we have established a ceiling that represents the maximum royalty that a franchisee would pay in a given month, and a floor that represents the minimum amount. We feel this is the most equitable approach for all franchisees since it insures that no one pays too much, but everyone at least pays something.

The franchise royalty is 5% of gross revenues, with $795 being the maximum monthly payment by a franchisee and $195 being the minimum.

The advertising royalty is 3% of gross revenues, with $395 being the maximum monthly payment by a franchisee and $95 being the minimum.

Profit with Low Overhead
A Curves franchise can operate in a space as small as 1,000 square feet which keeps rent and other operating costs as low as possible. Payroll expenses are minimal when a franchise owner-operator hires a young person or student to work Monday through Friday evenings. Other costs include insurance, utilities, and small miscellaneous expenses.
